More Denny’s Training and a Thank You From Brother On The Rise

Today was my second day of Denny’s training, and while I don’t want to harp on all of the nonsense the seminar unloaded on me today, I do want share a few interesting details that might be of interest.

For example, for about 15 minutes we discussed personal hygiene, focusing on things like the difference between antiperspirant and deodorant—antiperspirant is acceptable while deodorant is not—how to wash ones hair and how to avoid coffee breath.

Now, I can tolerate being lectured about dental health and the importance of a bright smile, but it’s only because I am getting paid for my patience. Additionally, I couldn’t whip better blog topics up, even in my most creative moment. I mean, who thinks of using the chicken dance as punishment if an employee is found using their cell phone during a shift?

I also received my uniform today—it’s a classy all-black getup. I will have to take a picture for another entry soon, so stay tuned. Before I move away from Denny’s, let me say that I am approaching this job with an open mind. Today during the orientation I was told that Denny’s is turning a new page. “All the bad stuff you know about Denny’s, that was yesterday.” I am proud to be apart of “Tomorrow.”

I also want to share an email I received from Brothers on the Rise. Not long ago I donated the sum of my car and health insurance to the wonderful organization in Oakland. This is the email response I received from Executive Director, Jon Gilgoff:

Hello Jason,

I am writing to personally thank you for your generous donation to Brothers on the Rise.  It was such a wonderful surprise.  Thanks also for sharing about your story.  I agree that community is key and I definitely felt that from you through your letter and contribution.  It will definitely help support the work we are doing with male youth and their families here in Oakland.

With donations of $250 or over, the San Francisco Study Center, writes up letters for tax purposes, so when I send it into them for deposit, I’ll make a note for them to mark your contribution as requiring this documentation.

Again, thanks so much and if you are still in the Bay Area or come back this way, please do not hesitate to contact me as it would be great to have you come to one of our programs and see firsthand how your generosity benefits our boys.

Cheers and be well,

Jon Gilgoff, L.C.S.W.

Just found your site through EHOWA, and got hooked to the screen. I think you are en-boding the now lost American spirit of adventure. People are just too scared to look beyond their front doors. Congrats on not being afraid to live!

    Hello Jason,
I have found the article on you so inspiring – You are like a breath of fresh air ! May I say this?, that if you do not succeed at finding employment as a journalist/writer, that you give careful thought to going back to school, to enter the counceling profession? OR an Educator. You can hear your zest for life, and also willingness to try – such a welcome personality quality these days. I’d like to mark your site and follow your blog. Praying for God’s favor in your life.
    Sincerely
    A Craigslister !

    Jason,

Merely an observation, but reading through your comments I am reminded of how many ppl in this country believe in God. I suppose that by never entering the middle third of our country it’s a strange concept to me. At any rate I’ve enjoyed reading your posts–they are intriguing and refreshing.
